Homeschool Village ~ Heart for the Arts

Homeschool Village

This weeks topic at the Homeschool Village: A Heart for the Arts. Post a picture of your homeschooler enjoying art and what you are planning on teaching!

Until about 2 days ago, I wasn’t certain exactly what we were going to do for art {other than arts & crafts, rice & beans projects}. Cindy from Along the Way let me borrow one of her books {which I promptly spilled coffee on and hence committed myself to using that book for our art time this coming year…Discovering Great Artists by MaryAnn Kohl.

Ok, I kid {somewhat}. The books is actually what I was looking for ~ art activities for kids based on famous artist along with a brief bio on each artist. We’re going to get together with Cindy and her kids twice a month and learn about a different artist and try our hand at some different art techniques.

Other than painting and drawing, we love to see plays from time to time {depending on what is available and how much they are!}. Flat Stanley has been one of our favorite plays so far! Stanley got flattened by the big ol’ bulletin board below.

And as far as music goes…this past spring, both girls took piano lessons and also had their first recital! Practicing was hard for McKenna, but she wrote her own song to play for the recital too ~ it was cute!

  • That's such a great book! We used it last year and will be incorporating it into our curriculum again this year. I'd love to get my hands on some of her other stuff, too.

  • We went to see Lincoln Center Institute's musical, Nightingale Tuesday night. This will be the springboard for a literature unit on Hans Christian Anderson's Fairy Tales in the Fall. We will be using Dynamic Art Projects For Children by Denise Logan this year.

  • Thank you so much for loving my book, "Discovering Great Artists". I loved writing it! It changed my life... until then, I hadn't known too much about artists, and really found out they are fascinating plus kids love doing art in the styles of the great masters. I now have added "Great American Artists for Kids" and it's in full color. Both of these books are on my website at my 25th Anniversary Sale Price, which includes shipping and tax. It's only good through July 31, so if you want a fast and cheap copy, hurry to my website.

I'm so happy that people love giving their children the chance to explore and discover their creativity through art.

  • Wow, I am commenting right after MaryAnn Kohl!

I am so glad you posted this! Last night I was sitting with my planning sheet in front of me, surrounded by books trying to figure out next years curriculum and I was stuck on art. I mean we are working through Drawing With Children, so the practical side is covered, but I wanted to do a little art appreciation as well. This books sounds perfect. I have several of MaryAnn Kohl's books, which I LOVE, but I had never seen this one...thanks for the recommendation!

  • hehehe..."spilled coffee on book," is an interesting way to choose your curriculum. HA!

Aren't live plays and musicals great? Mine LOVES to go to the theatre! He's just not allowed on stage for a while...

  • That's the same book we're using too! Although, I didn't use the "spill coffee on book" method of choosing it. Of course, if I had maybe the author would be reading my blog too....you and your crazy methods! :)

  • We foind that book at a garage sale for .50 the other day. I love it! We also use a variety of lit on each artist.

  • Ooooh, that book is in my amazon shopping cart right now! I've been waiting forever to finally click that magic button. LOL

For fine arts we do artist studies and composer studies. This year I'm trying to be more purposeful about them. (This is why that book is my cart. LOL) We attend the ballet at least once a year and a couple of plays at our local theater. For actual art we use I Can Do All Things by How Great Thou Art. I love this program. It's so easy for a non-artsy person like me to use. We do it together. This year we're also using How to Teach Children Art by Evan-Moor.

All of these has been difficult since the appearance of our tot. I'm hoping we're finally over the hump and she's going to be more cooperative so we can get more accomplished.
